Vera S. Murphy

GREENFIELD - Vera Sue Murphy, of Greenfield, passed away Wednesday morning, June 4, 2025. She was born on October 11, 1944 in New Castle, Indiana, the daughter of James Arlie and Ernestine (Morrow) Branscum. She graduated from Knightstown High School in 1963; she also graduated cum laude from Milligan College, Johnson City, TN., in 1967 and received her master’s degree from Butler University, Indianapolis, IN. in 1970. Vera began her teaching career in the fall of 1967 at Charles A Beard Schools, teaching 1st grade at Knightstown Elementary. She married Greg Murphy in 1975 and moved to Greenfield where they made their home. Vera began teaching 1st grade at Greenfield-Central Schools, Eden Elementary, in the fall of 1976. She retired in 2003 after teaching 36 years. Vera and her husband are members of The Caring Place Church in Indianapolis. Vera’s life has been blessed with loving family, dear friends and the love, mercy and grace of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who never leaves us or forsakes us. She and Greg enjoyed many years vacationing on Ft. Myers Beach with friends at their favorite spot, Smugglers Cove. They also enjoyed visiting Israel, Maui and spending time with friends at Gatlinburg. Vera is survived by her husband, Greg Murphy; brothers, James Duane Branscum and wife Sue Ann of Big Lake, MN. and David N. Perry of Gulf Shores, AL.; nieces, Darla (Mike) Meier of Big Lake, MN. and Dawn (Randy) Tveitbakk of Zimmerman, MN.; sister-in-law, Marilyn Gant of Greenfield; and several nieces, nephews and dear friends. Vera was preceded in death by her two baby boys, Paul Tyler and Brian Samuel Murphy; her father, James Arlie Branscum; and her loving parents, Bob and Ernestine Perry. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. The funeral service will take place on Monday, June 9, 2025 at 1:30 p.m., with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield, Indiana.
