Kevin Earl Burk

GREENFIELD – Kevin Earl Burk, age 64, of Greenfield, passed away Monday, January 12, 2026, at Community Hospital North after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Greenfield on November 3, 1961, to Robert Earl and Rosalind “Rosie” (Phares) Burk. Kevin graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1980. He married Brenda (Horsley) on June 15, 1985, in Indianapolis. Kevin was a firefighter for Indianapolis Fire Department for forty years before retiring in 2022. He began his career as a volunteer at Buck Creek Fire Department before joining Lawrence Township Fire Department prior to its consolidation with IFD. He served as a Battalion Chief and concluded his service as a Captain at Station 17. While not on duty, he worked as a block mason for nearly forty years. When he wasn’t fighting fires or laying block, Kevin devoted himself wholeheartedly to his community and family. He served Mt. Vernon Schools for many years through the PTO, School Board, and little league sports. He and Brenda were most proud of their 20+ years organizing and handcrafting hundreds of games and decorations for the Mt. Comfort Elementary Fall Festival. He took so much pride in his community and loved knowing that he was investing in its future. Though Kevin held many roles throughout his life, his most cherished titles were “Poppy” to his eight grandchildren, “Dad” to his three sons, and “My Boyfriend” to Brenda. He dedicated his life to the joy and comfort of his family. Kevin was happiest camping and traveling with Brenda and their friends (especially the annual trip to Ft. Myers!), tackling DIY projects with his children, and hosting sleepovers with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; sons, Mitchel (Melissa) Burk, Spencer (Anna) Burk, and Carter (Grace) Burk; eight grandchildren, Charlotte, Calvin, Simon, Nora, Lucy, Remy, Miles, and Mila; brother, Richard (Trina) Burk; and sister, Cindy (Chris) Burk; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Earl and Rosalind “Rosie” Burk; brothers, Michael Burk and Greg Burk; sister, Katrina Burk; father-in-law, Jerry Horsley. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Comfort Church, 3179 N. 600 W., Greenfield, IN 46140, with viewing from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Mitchel Burk will be officiating. Burial will follow at New Palestine Cemetery in New Palestine.
