John Robert Hoss

GREENFIELD – John Robert Hoss, age 79, passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield. Born in Columbus on July 12, 1930, John was the son of Theodore W. and Eleanor (Brooks) Hoss. He married Mary L. Sanders on February 4, 1951, in Indianapolis. John graduated from Greenfield High School in 1948 and he attended Indiana University Extension in Indianapolis as well as the Barre School of Memorial Art in Barre, Vermont. He was a member of the Greenfield Friends Church where he had served as Trustee. He had served as a Trustee of the Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends, also. Mr. Hoss owned and operated the Greenfield Granite Company from 1948 until 2003. During his long career as a memorial artist, he was a member of the Monument Builders of North America (M.B.N.A.) and served the Indiana Monument Builders Association in various capacities including President, Vice President, and Treasurer. He served on the Board of the Walnut Ridge Friends Cemetery. Mr. Hoss was a Democratic Precinct Committeeman, and was a member of the Hancock County Democrat’s Club. He had been a member of the Greenfield Lions Club and the Greenfield Elks Club in the past. Surviving him are his wife, Mary L. Hoss of Greenfield; daughters, Virginia R. Hoss of Indianapolis, Brenda L. Hoss of Grand Rapids, MI, and Sarah M. Hoss of Charlotte, NC. He is survived by his grandchildren, Phillip A. Bush, Maggie Kao (fiancé), Steven R. Bush, Beth Solhein (wife), Teresa L. Hoss, and Eleanor F. Hoss as well as nieces and nephews, Rebecca Fletcher, John Fletcher, Cynthia Heck and Michael Heck. Preceding him in death were his parents. Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Greenfield Friends Church. Pastors Rick Schoeff and Paul Enyart will be officiating. Burial will take place at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Memorial contributions in memory of John may be made to the Greenfield Friends Church, 323 West Park Avenue, Greenfield, Indiana 46140.
