James Skaggs

GREENFIELD – James Forrest Skaggs, age 79, of Greenfield, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital. He was born in Indianapolis on May 27, 1945 to Forrest and Myrtle (Mitchell) Skaggs. James graduated from Noblesville High School in 1964. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965-1967 and proudly served in the National Guard for 29 years. James married Cheryl (Gray) on June 28, 1968 in Carmel. James was a decorated, respected, and honored arson investigator for the State of Indiana from 1978 to 2015. Arson investigations were changed after he implemented certification classes. His ethical and moral treatment of all individuals ensured his success at home and at work. He was a dedicated member of the Greenfield American Legion and attended Outlook Christian Church. James was very meticulous about mowing his grass and yard work. He also enjoyed gardening and feeding the birds. He cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. If you couldn’t find him, he was probably piddling around in his garage. James is survived by his wife, Cheryl Skaggs; daughters, Catherine Petzold and Carrie Skaggs; three grandchildren, Logan McNally, Paul (Courtney) McNally, and Rebecca Rutledge; two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Gabriel; sister, Linda (Donnie) Tomlinson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Myrtle Skaggs; son, Anthony Skaggs; and great-granddaughter, Maddilynn Rutledge. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will take place immediately following the visitation at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Andrew Conley will be officiating. Burial will follow at Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville with military rites presented by the Active Duty.
