Anthony Mead

GREENFIELD - Anthony Charles Mead, 88, heard the words “well done good and faithful servant” and arrived in his heavenly home on February 10th, 2022, just one day shy of his 89th birthday. Anthony (Tony) was born on February 11, 1933, in London, England as the oldest son to Alfred and Edith (Gingell) Mead. Anthony married the love of his life, Manetta (Oliver) Mead on September 19th, 1959 in Maxwell, Indiana, and remained married for 54 years until her death in 2014. Anthony worked as a typesetter for Typo Corporation in Indianapolis until his retirement in 1992. He served in the United States Army from 1953-1955 where he received the National Defense Service Medal. He became an active member of the Sugar Creek Township Fire Department in 1960 and served as Fire Chief from 1975-1979. He was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he faithfully washed dishes for countless turkey and noodle dinners. He was a member of the American Legion, a former Boy Scout Troop leader and volunteered at the Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen. Anthony was known for being fun loving, incredibly stubborn, a loyal friend, a collector of model trains, a bird watcher, a master of backyard ponds, a pie baker, a faithful viewer of Young and the Restless, but most notably as an unselfish and humble caregiver for his wife following her debilitating stroke in January of 1985. Anthony displayed what it meant to have a true servant’s heart. Anthony is survived by his children, Angela (Curtis) Kent of Fountaintown, Brian (Dana) Mead of Waynesville, Missouri, Craig Mead of Greenfield, and Deanna (John) Hobbs of New Palestine; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; close friend, Janice Tearman; and one extremely spoiled and overweight canine companion, Sissy. Anthony was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; brother, Rodney and close friend, Steve Tearman. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 16th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. pm at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory 1484 W. US 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held at the mortuary on Thursday, February 17th at 11:00 a.m. Chaplain Katherine Murray will be officiating. Burial will follow at Philadelphia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen 202 E.
