Anita Mae (Schmidt) Smith

GREENFIELD – Anita Mae (Schmidt) Smith, age 93, of Greenfield, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017, at home surrounded by loving family. She was born on October 18, 1923 in Earl Park, IN as the daughter of John and Catherine (Gick) Schmidt. She graduated from Earl Park High School in 1942. She served in the Women’s Army Corps. She married William M. Smith on June 10, 1947 in Lafayette, IN. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Greenfield for 60 years. Anita enjoyed Euchre Club, crocheting, quilting, avidly reading, and spending time with her grandbabies and great-grandbabies. She is survived by her son, Phillip (Sherri) M. Smith of Center Grove, IN; daughters, Cindy L. (Joel) Wigger and Linda A. (Joseph) Mabee, both of Greenfield, IN, and Nyla M. (Timothy) Staples of Morristown, IN; sisters, Pauline Melson, and Rosemary Puetz; 11 grandchildren, Jason Wigger, Paul (Erin) Wigger, Matthew Mabee, Amanda Mabee (Chris Costa), Christopher (Lauren) Mabee, Colleen Mabee Huff, J.D. Staples (Sarah Johnson), Katie (Jonathon) Higdon, Dean Springer, Dawson Smith, and Rebecca Smith; and 6 great-grandchildren, Bronson, Phoebe, Fletcher, Adalynn, Liam, and Sophie. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine Schmidt; husband, William Smith; son, Stephen Smith; grandson, Douglas Mabee; brothers, Herman Schmidt, Charlie Schmidt, Ervin Schmidt, Cecil Schmidt, and James Schmidt; and sister, Rita LaBeau. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a rosary service at 3:30 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the mortuary with viewing one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
