December 6, 1936 - April 23, 2020
GREENFIELD, IN – Avis Yvonne (Schneekloth) Amundson, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and ‘friend to many’ passed into Heaven at the age of 83 years on Thursday April 23, 2020 while in hospice care at Springhurst Health Campus following a brief illness. She was born on a small farm in Rock County, MN on December 6, 1936, the youngest of six children to Arnold & Mary (Slieter) Schneekloth. Soon thereafter the family moved to a farm west of Hills, MN where she lived out her formative years. Following graduation from Hills High School, she attended South Dakota State University for two years. There she met and fell in love with the true love of her life, Merle Amundson from Colton, SD. They married on June 5, 1958 and soon thereafter moved to Boston, MA for Merle to complete his pharmacy Ph.D. studies. In 1961 they moved to Indiana, where they resided their entire lives, with the exception of many fun winters in Sun Lakes, AZ later in life. In her earlier years of life, Avis loved horseback riding and attending rodeos, making her own “cowboy shirts”. After marriage, she focused on raising their three sons, however faith remained a vital and integral part of her life: she was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church for many decades, most memorably (to her sons at least) as a Sunday School teacher. She was an active volunteer in many local civic organizations and when time allowed she enjoyed golf, even more so during their winter respites to Sun Lakes, AZ after Merle’s retirement. She loved to garden, producing beautiful flowers and freshly grown vegetables. She had many passions in life, but none as great as her family. She received much joy in attending any/all grandchildren events. She is survived by three sons, Eric (Tracie) Amundson of Greenfield, Dr. Paul (Dr. Alison Tendler) Amundson of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Peter (Polly) Amundson of Westfield, IN; sister, Mary (Milton) Eitreim of Bella Vista, AR.; eight grandchildren, Mathew, Jacob, Jenna, Nicholas, Mia, Austin, Blake and Eliana; two step-grandchildren, Amy and Austin; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Merle, parents Arnold & Mary, two brothers (Bob & Roger) and two sisters (Vivian & Verna Mae). Due to the current COVID-19 circumstances, a memorial service and committal of ashes will be held in South Dakota at a future date. The family strongly encourages friends/family to share a memory or condolence at www.erleweinmortuary.com. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made by mail to the “Merle & Avis Amundson Freshman Scholarship” c/o South Dakota State University Foundation, 815 Medary Ave., Box 525, Brookings, SD 57007. A final thank you to her many devoted friends, who were invaluable support to us all following Merle’s death in late 2017; physician and “honorary son” Dr. Scott Capen and family; and all care givers from Hancock Memorial Hospital and Springhurst Assisted Living Facility. God bless you all. Arrangements are being handled by Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield.
