William "Dale" DeRome

GREENFIELD – William Dale DeRome, Jr., age 73, of Greenfield, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2020. He was born in Beech Grove, Indiana on July 28, 1947 to William Dale and Wilma Jean (Hogan) DeRome. He attended IPS schools thru 6th grade, Shelby County schools thru 9th grade and completed high school at New Palestine High School in 1965. He gave his heart to Jesus at age 17 at Cadle Tabernacle in Indianapolis. Dale served in the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command as an in-flight refueling repairman from 1966 to 1970. During his service, he spent time assigned at Lackland, Texas; Sheppard, Texas; Columbus, Mississippi; and Kadena, Okinawa Air Force Bases. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann (Bowman) in May of 1966 at Burge Terrace Baptist Church. Dale worked for International Harvester Company on Brookville Road, later known as Navistar, from 1965 until 2007. He began his career there as a floor sweeper and stock mover and worked his way to senior engineer by the time he retired. He also volunteered as a reserve deputy sheriff in Hancock County from 1976 to 1983 and worked nights at Tele-fixit TV and Radio Repair. He is survived by his wife of 54 happy years, Mary Ann DeRome; children, Michael Dale DeRome, D. Ryan DeRome, Dana (Shane) Jones, Beth Nicole (Bryan) Weiss; daughter-in-law, Karen DeRome; grandchildren, Katie (Justin), Allison, Levi, Grace, Maggie, Melissa, Michelle, Emma, Cooper, Henry, and Elias; brother, Jerry DeRome; and sister-in-law, Cheryl DeRome. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Wilma DeRome; grandparents, Hanson and Dessie (Tucker) Hogan, James Irwin DeRome, Malia Delon; and half-brother, John D. DeRome. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. at the mortuary. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield with military honors.
