Wayne Douglas Linville

Wayne Douglas (Doug) Linville passed away peacefully, December 20, 2008 at Hancock Regional Hospital, surrounded by close friends and family. Doug was born December 3, 1946 in Batesville, IN, to Elmer “Buss” and Esther (Skodje) Linville. He married Becky Dunn in 1968, his wife of 40 years. Other survivors include his two daughters, Katie and Ann, and his son-in-law, Justin Grinstead. Doug was “Pappy” to his grandson, Landon Douglas Bewley. He is also survived by brother, Rock (Cheryl) Linville, Greensburg, sister, Janet (Tom) Neimeyer (Greenwood), sister, Marilyn (Scott) Seright, (Carmel), mother–in-law Lois Jean Dunn, (Rushville), and several beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Larry Lee Linville. He graduated from New Salem High School in 1965, Brevard Junior College, and the University of West Florida. He received his master’s degree from Ball State University. While in high school, Doug scored 2,120 points, making him today the 22nd all-time leading scorer in Indiana high school basketball. While at the University of West Florida, Doug set nine all-time and seven individual scoring records. He was named most valuable player and later inducted into the University of West Florida’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a teacher for 33 years, starting his career at Pensacola High School, in Florida, and 32 years at Mt. Vernon Middle School, Fortville, IN where he coached many sports. One of Doug’s greatest joys was his high school golf coaching career, where he was known as “Coach Linville” for over two decades. Doug was a man of many interests. Known for his love of the outdoors he spent many hunting seasons with his friends. His unforgettable hunting stories will live on and be shared for years to come. Doug’s passion for raising and showing pigs started as a young boy and remained a cornerstone in his and his family’s lives. His hard work and dedication led him thousands of miles across the country showing and promoting his breeding stock and enjoying the fraternity and commoradarie of his fellow breeders. He was an influential figure in the swine industry locally and nationally. His genuine love for the industry shined through the accomplishments of the youth as they carry the torch with their own herds. His true influence was recognized at the 2008 Indiana State Fair when he was awarded the National Spotted Swine Distinguished Service Award. Doug was a proud member of Royal Hylands Golf Club where he was multiple time Club Champion. With fellow members, he also won the Indiana Golf Association Team Championship in 2002. His love of the game affected players of all levels. A Celebration of Doug’s life will be held, Monday, December 29, at 6:00 p.m. in the Mt. Vernon Middle School Gymnasium, 1862 W. State Road 234, Fortville, Indiana, 46040. A graveside service will be held for family and close friends on Tuesday, December 23, at Hopewell Cemetery in Rush County.
