Walter P. Waitt

Greenfield – Walter P. Waitt, age 89, of Greenfield, passed away Friday, December 9, 2022 at Major Hospital in Shelbyville. Walt was born June 3, 1933, in Sheridan, Indiana, and was the son of Ilo (Pritsch) and Noble Waitt. Walter graduated from Sheridan High School (1951), and received his bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Purdue University (1955). While attending Purdue, Walt was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, serving on the Livestock Judging Team. Walt was a veteran of the United States Army Reserve attaining the rank of Captain. He spent his professional career working at Eli Lilly as an animal nutritionist for 36 years. Over the years Walter served his community on the Hancock County Council, the New Palestine School Board, the Hancock County Fair Board and Extension Council, the Greenfield Chamber of Commerce, and the Hancock Regional Hospital Foundation Board. He served as Swine Superintendent at the Hancock County Fair for 35 years, was a member of Hancock County Pork Producers, was on the Board of Directors for Indiana Pork Producers, was Chairman of the Indiana Pork Producers State Fair Pork tents and was a member of the National Pork Producers Federation Council, and the Purdue Alumni Educational Opportunities Scholarship Committee. Walt enjoyed talking to friends and learning what was going on, eating out, driving around the countryside looking at crops, watching Purdue athletics, mentoring kids with 4-H livestock, and cooking pork burgers for various charities. His drive, determination and perseverance were an inspiration to all who knew him through his “journey” over the last five years. Walter was a member of the Bradley United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine, Elks Lodge, Hancock County FOP, Kiwanis, Purdue Alumni Association (Lifetime Member), and the Purdue University President’s Council. Walt is survived by his children Mindy Hunnicutt (Andy), Tammy Fox (Fred), Salliann Flake, and John Waitt (Jennifer); stepson Jeff Kindred (Shelli); grandchildren Jacob (Mel), Amanda, Abby, and Rebecca Hunnicutt; Savannah and Chase Sturm (Madison), and Trace Flake; Ann, Demi, and Olivia Waitt; Emilie Grass (Jesse) and Madison Kindred; and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister (Winifred Parvu), first wife Ann (Lowe) Waitt, 2nd wife Janet (Jacobi) Waitt, and son-in-law Jim Flake. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 15th from 4 – 7 pm at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 16th at 11:00 am at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory. Burial will follow at New Palestine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hancock County Community Foundation – The Walter Waitt Family Community Development Fund, 312 E.
