Thomas E. Johnson

GREENFIELD – Thomas E. Johnson, 97, of Greenfield, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at his residence. He was born on July 11, 1927, in Rush County, Indiana, to the late Alva G. Johnson & Susan E. (Scholl) Johnson. Tom was a proud graduate of New Salem High School, class of 1945. He was a veteran of the 8th Army I Corps. Tom met Barbara V. Applegate through their siblings during card night with family. They married on November 21, 1947, in Indianapolis. Together they enjoyed 73 years of marriage, until Barbara's passing in 2021. In his leisure, Tom enjoyed watching IU basketball games, Cincinnati Reds games, and was a master carpenter. There was nothing that he built that was not built for the long haul. Tom and his partner, Bud Raesner, repaired many barns and built several houses in the New Palestine and Central Indiana area. Tom moved into lumber sales with Cumberland Lumber Company/Schreiber Lumber Company, retiring in 1997. Tom was a member and Elder of Nameless Creek Christian Church in Greenfield; a 75-year member of the New Palestine Masonic Lodge, Greenfield American Legion; and was a former member of the Charlottesville Lion’s Club. Tom was also a member of the Sugar Creek Township Advisory Board for many years. He was a thoughtful and kind and stern hard-working, opinionated, very neighborly, and outgoing type of a guy. Tom is survived by his daughter, Cindy Newman (Mel); son, Keith Johnson (Donna Pappe); daughter-in-law, Jennifer Johnson; sister-in-law, Donna Richards; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Tom is preceded in death by his parents and wife mentioned above; son, Kevin Johnson; great-grandson, Evan Neumeister; sisters, Frances Kirchner, Gertrude Ingle, Mary Bogue, Georgia Reynolds; brothers, Alva “Bud” Johnson, Jr., Gene Johnson; infant brother, Donald Johnson. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 10, 2025, from 12:00pm – 2:00pm at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 2:00pm which will also include a masonic service. Officiating the service will be Tristan Oren. Burial will follow at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson with military honors rendered by the U.S. Army.
