Phyllis J. Sampson- Shupperd

Phyllis J. Sampson-Shupperd July 10, 1934 – July 4, 2010 Phyllis Joyce Sampson-Shupperd, age 75, went to be with her Lord on July 4, 2010 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield, Indiana. She was born on July 10, 1934 in Middlesboro, KY and moved to Lima, Ohio at age 8. She graduated from Lafayette-Jackson High School in Lafayette, Ohio in the class of 1952. After graduation, she went to Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL and was in the class of 1956. She was a member and was married in the Northside Baptist Church in Lima, Ohio on November 7, 1954. She worked for the City Loan in Lima, Ohio, then went to Moody and moved to Indiana after her marriage. She was an EMT for over 30 years, a substitute school teacher, a legal secretary, and an executive secretary for American United Life Insurance. Phyllis was the first Vernon Township Assessor in Hancock County, a position she held for over 25 years. She had a real love for music and played piano and organ for several churches in the area. Phyllis also taught Sunday school, went on two trips to Haiti as a medical missionary, and went on one trip to the flood of 1993 in Missouri for three weeks. She served as a volunteer for the Red Cross at the State Fair and other sites, as well as serving as a volunteer EMT at the Indianapolis 500. She said that God had blessed her so much for the work that she was able to do for Him. As her children were growing up, she was a Den Mother for Boy Scouts and a Girl Scout Leader, plus she went to all the school activities for all of her five children. She said that God was so good to her. She is survived by her husband of more than 55 years, Thomas E. Shupperd; five children, Timothy (DeAnn), Joy Hunt, Janyce Merz (John), Trent (Donna), and Todd (Beth); seven foster children, who lived in her home at various times; three grandchildren, Khyla, Rebekah, Brandon (Nikki), and Angela; four great-grandchildren, Skyla, Beth, and Samantha, and Dakota; brother, Bill (Joyce) Sampson and their children, Craig and Kerry (Amy); sister, Jackie (Darrell) Kent of Ada, Ohio and their children, Deb, Lonnie, and Bill; sister, Betty Howell of Dallas, Texas and her children, Patricia, Sandy, Mary, and Jeri; special aunts, Joyce Johnson and Lauretta Evans; and special cousin, Dianne Cavinder. There are also 42 surviving first cousins that were very special to Phyllis and given to her by the Lord. Preceding her in death were her parents, Ernest Royce and Mary Edna (Mason) Sampson, who are awaiting her in heaven. Phyllis said her classmates from the class of 1952 were all the greatest! Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 7, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary in Fortville. Funeral services will be on Thursday, July 8, at 10:00 a.m. at the mortuary.
