Marie Pannell

GREENFIELD – Marie Ellen (Ochs) Pannell, age 94, of Greenfield, Indiana, went to be with her Lord on January 16, 2025. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Henry C. and Ida K. Ochs. She lived on the near east side of Indianapolis and graduated from Howe High School in 1948. She continued to work in the office at Howe High School until she was set up on a blind date with George W. Pannell, the nephew of a coworker. Marie and George dated until their wedding, October 30, 1954. They soon had a son and the family of three became George, Marie, and Brian Lee until they welcomed their daughter, Anjanette. Marie and George moved to Hancock County in 1972 and in addition to her responsibilities in running the household and raising children, she learned to sew and preserve the produce that George grew in their garden. She was a member and officer in a local home economics club for many years. Both she and George were active members at Fortville Christian Church for decades until they made Park Chapel Christian Church their church home in later years. Marie loved her family and she and George enjoyed hosting holidays and birthday celebrations at their home in Greenfield after they moved from their mini farm where they had lived forty-five years. George made sure that both homes had bird feeders outside the windows where Marie would sit and enjoy nature. Marie is survived by her husband, George W. Pannell; son, Brian Pannell; daughter, Anjanette (Daryl) Wicker; grandchildren, Stephanie Wicker, Melanie (Chad) Hilton, Brittany Pannell, and Tim Pannell; and great-grandchildren, Colt, Porter, and Lyla. She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ida Ochs; infant brother, Jimmy George Ochs; and younger brother, Eugene Ochs. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Park Chapel Christian Church, 1176 E McKenzie Rd, Greenfield, IN 46140. Pastor Dale Holzbauer will be officiating. Entombment will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana. Marie’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the caregivers at Suburban Hospice for the extraordinary compassion they provided to Marie during the last week of her life.
