Jerry Hampton

Gerald “Jerry” Wayne Hampton went to be with the Lord on Tuesday May 9, 2023. Jerry was born on February 13, 1941, in Addison, Alabama to Homer and Florence (Walker) Hampton, and he graduated from Addison High School in 1959. He worked in several places in Alabama and Ohio, and settled in Merrillville Indiana, before accepting employment for Rand McNally for 23 years. He was then employed by Townsends Printing in Muncie, Indiana and UN Printing in Carmel, Indiana, before retiring. Jerry loved to tinker in his garage, on whatever was the project of the day, he was a small engine whisperer, and loved to fish or boat, work in his garden or canning, play pool and always up for watching Alabama football. Jerry also played lead guitar in the Green River Band around Indianapolis for several years and loved to entertain. He loved to be around family, with all his kids, and their friends. He also loved visiting his Alabama family, and they loved him as well. He will be sorely missed by those in Alabama. Gerald married Shirley Ann Crum on July 3, 1961. Jerry later married Avalon Johns Everhart on August 13, 1988, and is survived by her. He is also survived by a sister Betty Patton and a sister-in-law Margaret Hampton in Alabama, 3 children from his first marriage, David (Kristy) Hampton of Owensboro, KY, Tammy Wheeler of Greenfield, IN, and Cindy (Ken) McCloud of New Palestine, IN. Avalon brought two children, Daniel Everhart of Indianapolis, IN and Kathy (Dan) Blankenbaker of Yorktown, IN. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of family in and around Addison, Alabama. Jerry was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Carla McCloud, his parents Homer and Florence Hampton, and sisters Zula Hampton, Ila (Tom) Stevenson, Jewell (Troy) Oliver, Carolyn (Olen) Elam, and brothers Lowell (Louise) Hampton and James (Margaret) Hampton. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to your local parks department or the Department of Natural Resources. The funeral service will be held at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140 on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 2:30 pm est. Visitation will be from 12:30 pm est until time of service. Burial will follow at Philadelphia Cemetery in Greenfield.
