James Smith

GREENFIELD – James John Smith, age 78, of Greenfield, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2023 at his home. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 27, 1944, he was son the son of Phillippina Irene (Spreng) and William Stewart Smith. James graduated from Lincoln High School in Cleveland and attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and was deployed twice during Operation Desert Storm. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 after 34 years of service. On October 3, 1970, he married his first wife, Michele Ann (Sargent) Smith, who preceded him in death in 2011. James married his second wife, Lisa Joyce (Mitchell) Smith on March 19, 2014 in Venice, Florida. James had a career in sales and worked at Community Home Health as an assets specialist retiring in 2015. James was the business owner of The Gem Doctor at Union Station and two cell phone stores. He was a member at Cross of Grace Lutheran Church in New Palestine and the Greenfield VFW. He enjoyed researching his family’s Scottish history and attending Scottish festivals. James was a huge fan of wrestling and was a gifted cook. James is survived by his wife, Lisa Smith; children, David Smith, Brian Smith and Christopher Smith; stepchildren, Thomas Utter (Meri Null), Jillian Okray (Michael) and Seth Utter; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; sister, Sharon Williams (Gary); best friend, David Kelly; and his dogs, Mickey, Leeloo and Fiona. He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillippina and William; first wife, Michele; brother, William Smith; and sister, Phyllis Boim. Visitation and funeral service will be held on Monday, May 22, 2023 at Cross of Grace Lutheran Church, 3519 S. 600 W., New Palestine, IN 46163. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m., with military honors to follow. Arrangements are being handled by Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield.
