Harold J. Schmitt

INDIANAPOLIS– Harold J. Schmitt, age 68, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield. Born on July 18, 1940 in Cloverdale, Indiana, he was the son of Anthony and Lola (Carl) Schmitt. He graduated from Warren Central High School in 1960 and married Janice R. Sichting on November 6, 1965. Mr. Schmitt owned and worked for S & M Construction Company for 22 years. Harold was a member of Cumberland Christian Church where he served as a former deacon, trustee, and greeter. Harold volunteered his talent and time at the church with many building projects, including constructing the church information center. He was a skilled wood worker who could build anything. He also took a trip once a year to Pinehaven Christian Children’s Ranch to assist with building projects and was part of leading several CrossRoads Missions projects. Surviving him are his wife, Janice Schmitt of Indianapolis; children, Melissa (Rusty) Wilson of Louisville, KY, and Stephanie Schmitt of New Palestine; brothers, Donald (Sandra) Schmitt of Port St. Lucie, FL, and Larry (Sally) Schmitt of Alabaster, Alabama; sister, Patricia Peters of Cumberland; grandchildren, Zachery Wilson, Caleb Wilson, and Adrianna Wilson; and many other family members and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers, William Schmitt, James Schmitt, and Ronald Schmitt. Visitation will be Sunday, January 11, 2009 from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Funeral services will be on Monday, January 12, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Cumberland Christian Church. Pastor Tom Scott will be officiating and burial will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.
