George E. Wilson

GREENFIELD-George E. Wilson, 84 years old, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer on February 9, 2010. He was born on March 3, 1925, to the late George and Johana Adrian Wilson. He graduated from Southport High School in 1943. George was an employee of Indiana Bell Telephone Co. for over 39 years and the manager in Greenfield for 10 years and worked to switch over to the dial up system in 1957. He retired in 1982 as Executive Supervisor after many years of employment. He served as a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve, was a Past President of Kiwanis and the Hancock County United Way, and was a member of the Elks Club and the Hancock County Red Cross. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Greenfield Boys Club. George served as Cub Scout Master in his early years and was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church for 54 years. He loved sports of all kinds, including fishing and fly fishing. Mr. Wilson was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame football and also enjoyed going to the Colts games. After he retired, he kept active in many hobbies including locksmithing, woodworking, and gardening. He enjoyed his family and loved his children, 10 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Dee; sister, Dorothy White; children, Marcia (Rex) Dishon, David (Darlene) Wilson, Debby (Steve) Brooks, and Mark (Becky) Wilson; 10 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael; brother, Jim; and his parents. Family and friends will gather on Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Greenfield on Friday, February 12, 2010. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery on Troy Avenue in Indianapolis. Family and friends may gather after the service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church for food and friendship. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be contributed to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Hancock Regional Hospice, or to the American Cancer Society.
