Charles R. Stroh

GREENFIELD– Charles Rockefeller Stroh, age 89, passed away on April 8, 2013. Born on March 2, 1924, in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Samuel Lowery Stroh, Sr., and Helen Rockefeller Stroh. Charles graduated from Mt. Airy High School, Mt. Airy, MD, and attended the University of Baltimore School of Business, where he studied Industry and Management. He served in the U.S. Army as part of the U.S. Military force in Korea from 1944-1946. After the war, he worked on his father’s poultry farm in Mt. Airy, and later served as manager and executive vice president of several Chambers of Commerce in West Virginia, Virginia, Indiana, and Maryland. Charles retired in Hagerstown, Maryland, where he was active in directing the Leadership Hagerstown Program and youth mentoring. Charles received numerous awards and recognition for his service in Chamber of Commerce work. In 2007, Charles and his wife, Helen, moved to Greenfield. Charles was a lifelong Lutheran and was most recently a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Greenfield. He served in many areas in the church including lay minister, council, and as a choir member. Charles loved his family above all - especially his five grandchildren and the love of his life, Rose Lee. Surviving him are his daughters, Rebecca (Raymond) Pohland of Greenfield and Deborah (Dennis) McDonald of Herndon, Virginia; grandchildren, Matthew McDonald, Megan Pohland, Emily McDonald, Chris (Heather) Pohland, and Caitlyn Pohland; and a great-grandson, Landon Pohland. Preceding him in death were his wife, Helen Rose Lee Kuhns Stroh; parents; and siblings, Martha Trenary, William Stroh, Samuel Stroh, Jr., and David Stroh. Visitation will be on Friday, April 12, 2013, from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Greenfield. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. and Pastor Larry Gember will be officiating. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Springhurst Health Campus for their loving care of Charles and Lee in their later years.
