Charles G. Matlock

GREENFIELD – Charles G. Matlock, age 87, of Greenfield, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2016 at his home. He was born on June 27, 1929 in Hancock County as the son of Charles H. and Katie G. (Jones) Matlock. He graduated from Westland High School. He served in the Army Signal Corps during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He married Esther Corrine (Polley) Matlock on June 20, 1954 in Fountaintown. Charles was a farmer all his life. He was also the Blue River Township Trustee for 36 years, where he was instrumental in building the Jackson-Blue River Township fire station, the Farm Bureau member for 62 years and had served as the chairman, a Democrat Precinct Committeeman for 58 years and he served on the ICAP board for 22 years. Mr. Matlock was a lifelong member of Shiloh Christian Church where he was an elder and Sunday school teacher for 50 years. He was also a member of the American Legion. Charles was given the Sagamore of the Wabash award in 2002 by Governor, Frank O’Bannon. He loved IU basketball and playing cards, especially euchre. Charles is survived by his wife, Corrine Matlock of Greenfield; children, Janis (Michael) Robinson of North Carolina, Charles Matthew (Shirley) Matlock of Greenfield, Denise (Douglas) Smith of Greenfield, Carla (Tom) Killion of Indianapolis and Paul (Gail) Matlock of Indianapolis; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving, are sisters Ina Francis Wallace and Janet Dobbins. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles H. and Katie G. Matlock; and siblings, Helen Lucas, Nile Matlock, Adonis Smith, Loren Matlock and George Matlock. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2016 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Shiloh Christian Church, 4980 S. 500 E., Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 10 a.m., also at the church. Fred Girdwood will be officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield with military rites presented by the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent directly to Shiloh Christian Church, 4980 S. 500 E., Greenfield, IN 46140 or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 9075 N.
