Armin Apple

GREENFIELD – Armin Byron Apple, 78 of McCordsville, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at his home. He was born the son of Henry Byron & Cora Caroline (Prange) Apple on January 17, 1945. He graduated from New Palestine High School with the Class of 1963. He married his biggest supporter and the love of his life, Sherry Apple on August 18, 1968. They just celebrated 55 years of marriage. Armin lived a fruitful life marked by his dedication to family, farming, and community service. Armin received a short course certificate in agriculture from Purdue University, which paved the way for his lifelong career as a local county farmer. His dedication to farming extended beyond his own fields, as he supported various farming organizations by serving on their Board of Directors. These included Rushville Production Credit, Farm Credit Services of Louisville, Agri Bank, and the Farm Credit Council. In addition to farming, over the span of 27 years, he proudly served Hancock County on the Hancock County Council and as a Hancock County Commissioner. In 2006, Armin was named a Distinguished Hoosier by Governor Mitch Daniels, and Greenfield Mayor Fleeming proclaimed December 27th 2006 as “Armin Apple Day” for his service to Greenfield and Hancock County. His commitment to his community was further exemplified by his long active membership with the Mohawk United Methodist Church, and his avid support of 4-H, of which he was a 10 year member. Throughout his life, “Farmin’ Armin” continued to remain supportive of the 4-H program through his children and grandchildren. He was known to drive a four-hour roundtrip multiple times a week to attend 4-H and sporting events for his grandchildren. Armin enjoyed woodworking, reading, and spending quality time with his family. He was a big supporter of his grandchildren's activities, always offering encouragement and praise. He greatly enjoyed his Tuesday lunch with “the guys.” One of his favorite things to do was drive the county roads, sipping an ice-cold McDonald’s Diet Coke, with his beloved wife, Sherry, by his side. Armin is survived by his loving wife, Sherry Apple, of McCordsville; his daughters, Amy (Brian) Nierman of Brownstown, IN, and Angela (Marc) Gelormini of Brisbane, CA; his sister, Nitus Brock; brother-in-law, Robert Woods; sister-in-law, Kathy Samuelson; several nieces and nephews; and six cherished grandchildren, Shelby (Austin Stamm) Nierman, Ryland (Sidney Hoene) Nierman, Brayton Nierman, Caroline Gelormini, Camdyn Nierman, and Nico Gelormini. Armin is preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2023, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023, at 11:00am. Burial will follow the service at Park Cemetery, 621 S. State St., Greenfield, IN 46140. Memorial contributions in memory of Armin may be made to the Armin Apple Memorial Fund, c/o Erlewein Mortuary, 1484 W. US 40, Greenfield, IN *Checks Payable to granddaughter, Shelby Nierman.
