Andrew Nels Hegdahl

MCCORDSVILLE – Andrew “Andy” Nels Hegdahl, age 90, of McCordsville, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at his daughter’s home in Cass Lake, Minnesota. He was born in Littlefork, Minnesota, on December 30, 1932, to Arthur Oscar Hegdahl and Hulda Ulricka (Lindquist) Hegdahl. He graduated from Littlefork High School in 1951. He served three years in the United States Army, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. Andy completed a 3-year tool and die apprenticeship at Western Electric and worked there until retiring in 1985. On July 13, 1957, he married Lois Ruth (Norman) at Hope Church in Indianapolis, where they were active members. They moved to their lifelong home in Hancock County in 1960 and became members of Grace Baptist Church (Mohawk, IN). Andy faithfully served there as a trustee/deacon. He thrived as God’s provider for his wife and children. He shared 56 wonderful years of marriage with Lois, enjoying their children and grandchildren. Andy’s love for Jesus, people, and life was deeply rooted in assurance of his eternal destiny. He wanted others to know his Savior, asking, “Do you know where you are going when you die?” Andy sharpened his skills in many areas, from playing checkers to investing his savings. He intuitively knew how to use tools in the best way. He called himself “Handy Andy,” using his skills to do his own home/car repairs and to help others. His long retirement became a fulfilling second career: trimming trees, sharpening tools, and co-filing a tool patent. Andy is survived by his children, Laura Ruth (Lee) Nupson of Cass Lake, MN, Carla June (Victor) Dudley of New Carlisle, OH, and Arthur Andrew (Ruth) Hegdahl of McCordsville; 14 grandchildren: Anthony, Stephen, Tyler, Isaiah, Samantha, Kayla, Anna, Christina, Bethany, Julia, Amber, Andrew, Rachel, and Elise; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Hulda Hegdahl; wife, Lois Ruth Hegdahl; daughter, Dorothy Lois (Robert) Gerhart, and sisters, Annette, Beulah, Dorothy, Marie, and Carolyn. Private family services are being handled by Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield. Andy’s final earthly resting place will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Indianapolis. A memorial service will be held at Grace Baptist Church, Greenfield (Mohawk), IN, on Saturday, December 30th. Visitation will begin at 1 PM, followed by the service at 1:30 PM. Afterwards, there will be a time of fellowship and sharing memories, along with coffee and desserts.
