Albert V. Bowles

GREENFIELD – Albert V. Bowles, age 83, of Greenfield, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Sugar Creek Nursing and Rehab. He was born on September 19, 1932 in Rushville as the son of Walter F. and Ruth M. (Pugh) Bowles. A graduate of New Palestine High School in 1951, he completed requirements for an Associates Degree in Science at Vincennes University in 1979. Albert also attended Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL in 1968. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War and he also served in the Air Force Reserves. Albert married Betty (Huffman) on February 11, 1951 in Philadelphia, IN. He was a United Methodist Pastor from 1968-1990 at Blue River Chapel, Charlottesville, Bruceville/Asbury Chapel, Patoka/Wheeling/Atkinson Chapel, Vincennes/Decker/Trinity, Ogleville and St. Paul. He also worked as a tool and die maker at Switzer Corporation, Indiana Gear Works, Proportionaire and Fountain Forge. Mr. Bowles was a past president for the Greenfield Lions Club and a Boy Scout Leader in Philadelphia. He loved fishing, camping, gardening, writing poems, reading and playing the piano. He also loved collecting fossils, minerals and Indian artifacts. Albert is survived by his wife, Betty Bowles of Greenfield; three sons, Dr. Richard L. (Sharon) Bowles of Danville, IL, Ron Bowles of Bloomington, IN and John Albert (Michelle) Bowles of Salem, IN; four sisters, Thelma Nelson of Tennessee, Joyce Sheldon of Florida, Mary Ray of Georgia and Carolyn Davis of Florida; five grandchildren, Alexander, James, Tiffeny, Travis and Johnathon; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James Lee Bowles and Harry Short; and sister, Pearl Nixon. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 328 N. Swope Street, Greenfield, Indiana 46140. Reverend Mike Hopper will be officiating. Burial will follow at Philadelphia Cemetery in Philadelphia, IN with military rites presented by the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard.
