Walter Lenning

MORRISTOWN – Walter Hugh Lenning, age 86, of Morristown, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2020. He was born in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania on October 15, 1933 to Theodore and Dorothy (Serfass) Lenning. Walter graduated from Morristown High School in 1952. Mr. Lenning served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. Walter married Mary Alice (Goble) on November 17, 1956 at Morristown United Methodist Church. He retired in 1991 from Ford after 30 years of being a machine operator. He was also a bill poster for outdoor advertising in Indianapolis. Walter was a member of Morristown United Methodist Church, American Legion #102, and UAW Local #1111. He was an avid Morristown sports fan and always sat in his spot on the bleachers at each home game. Walter enjoyed watching sports on TV and going to Wednesday senior luncheons with his wife. Walter loved seeing all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed helping his son-in-law with his racing. Walter is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Lenning of Morristown; son, Gregory Alan Lenning of Southport; daughters, Lisa Ann Gumberts, and husband Scott, of Morristown, Lori Lee Cowen of Morgantown, and Linda Sue Leisure, and husband Bruce ,of Morristown; eight grandchildren, Stacey Brattain, Justin Lenning, Ashley McNeely, Mariah Theobald, Morgan Eads, Maressa West, Brooke Gumberts, and Brayton Leisure; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Dorothy Lenning; grandson, Dustin Cowen; and sons-in-law, Brad Eads and Gary Cowen. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at the mortuary. Grandson-in-law, Dan Theobald will be officiating. Burial will follow at Hanover Cemetery in Morristown.
