SHELBYVILLE – Maynard J. “Doc” Payne, age 59, died Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Shelbyville Major Hospital. Born on June 27, 1949 in Shelbyville, he was the son of Maynard C. and Margaret L. (Swain) Payne. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1967.
He worked as a self-employed general contractor his whole life. Mr. Payne was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville. He was a master scuba diver, had his private pilot’s license, and was a licensed ham radio operator.
Surviving him is his son, Maynard Rodney (Heather) Payne of Black Mountain, North Carolina; brothers, Brad Payne of Waldron, Michael (Lori) Payne of St. Paul; sisters, Ginny (Steve) Aldridge of Shelbyville, Manarda (Steve) Abel of Fountaintown, Sara (Butch) Yonts of Shelbyville; companion, Dawn Rutherford of Shelbyville; and two grandchildren, Bryson and Caden. Preceding him in death was his father.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 19, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Glenn George and Son Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Funeral services will be on Monday, April 20, at 11:00 a.m. at Glen George and Son with Rev. Robert Campbell officiating. Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield is handling the arrangements.
