GREENFIELD – Maxine Whetsel, age 89, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.  Born on October 17, 1920, in Hancock County, she was the daughter of Delmer and Freda (Claffey) Stant.  Maxine graduated from Mt. Comfort High School in 1938 and married G. Leslie Shull on October 20, 1941.  Together they worked at Jones Insurance Agency.  After Mr. Shull passed away, Maxine married R. Mark Whetsel on September 12, 1974.    

Maxine was a member of the Beech Grove Church of the Brethren and a 50 year member of the Eden chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star (formerly McCordsville chapter).  She was also a past worthy matron of the McCordsville Order of the Eastern Star.  Mrs. Whetsel was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary in Fortville.  She loved to work with flowers in her yard and garden.

Surviving her are her children, Nancy (Charlie) Burk of Noblesville and Leslie (Neal) Whetsel of Fortville; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; seven stepchildren; and sister, Barbara Garner of Fortville.  She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, G. Leslie Shull; second husband, R. Mark Whetsel; son, Larry Shull; two great-grandsons, Stephen Burk and Conner Anderson; brother, Leon Stant; and sister, Edna Evans. 

Visitation will be Sunday, November 1, 2009, from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary in Fortville with an Eastern Star service at 5:30 p.m.  Funeral services will take place on Monday, November 2, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the mortuary.  Burial will follow at Gravel Lawn Cemetery.
