Indianapolis – Elizabeth “Betty” (Bumbico) Pompei, age 78, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 in Indianapolis.  Born on February 4, 1931 in Chester West Virginia, she was the daughter of Frank and Katherine (Ausilia) Bumbico.  She graduated from St. John’s High School in Bellaire, Ohio. Betty married Nazareno Pompei on July 3, 1954 in Martin’s Ferry, Ohio. 

She worked for Wheeling Downs Race Track in Wheeling, West Virginia, as a cook.   She also worked at Revco in Wheeling as a customer service representative and a floor manager.  Mrs. Pompei was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Wheeling.  She was also the president of the residents’ council at Wildwood Health Care Center in Indianapolis and a member of the Red Hat Society in Indianapolis.

Surviving her are her son, Joseph “Joe” (April) Pompei of McCordsville; brothers, Ralph (Louise) Bumbico of Haywood, California, Sam (Nancy) Bumbico of Martins Ferry, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Tara (Steve) Gillespie, and Grant Newton.  Betty was expecting her first great-grandchild in October.  Preceding her in death were her parents; sisters, Mary Hood, Josephine Ruskowski, Laura Ruskowski, Jenny Skorich, Elizabeth Bumbico; and brothers, Nick Bumbico and Tony Bumbico. 

Visitation will be Thursday, June 4, 2009 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Altmeyers Funeral Home in Wheeling, West Virginia.  Funeral services will be on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 1:00 p.m., at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Wheeling, West Virginia.  Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia.
