GREENFIELD– Dorothy Alice Schoener-Wells passed through transition at her home April 5, 2009. She was born in New Palestine, Indiana May 17, 1926; the first born of Roy V. Schoener and Vivian O. Ulrey-Schoener. After early years in New Palestine, she was raised in Indianapolis. She graduated in 1945 from Arsenal Technical High School where she met her husband of 63 years, Lt. Colonel Theodore N. Wells, Jr., USAF Retired. They lived in 30 locations as a result of military, business, and teaching assignments before retiring to Greenfield, Indiana.
“Dot” was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, bookkeeper, and volunteer extraordinair. Her volunteer work included service with the Methodist Church, Welcome Wagon, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, a County Political Campaign, Grissom AFB Hospital, Wright Patterson AFB Hospital, Military Officers Clubs, Hancock Regional Hospital, the Red Cross, and Meals-On-Wheels. She was twice named “Volunteer-of-the-Year” at Grissom AFB in Peru, Indiana. Each of her five children were born on a military base.
Survivors include her husband, Theodore N. Wells, Jr.; five children, Judith A. Wells, David N. Wells, James L. Wells, Margo M. Wells-Rainford, and Diana L. Wells; eleven grandchildren, Katharine L. Eddy, Brian T. MacIntosh, Jr., Michelle R. Wells-Swamy, Jeremy N. Wells, Wyatt J. Wells, Dr. Alan S. Maugherman, Mellissa M. Maugerman-T. Thompson, Richard L. Maugherman, Christopher R. Thornton, Julie A. Kueber-Davis, and James M. Kueber; thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and two sisters, Margo A. McKee and Nancy L. Honor.
Viewing is at Erlewein Mortuary, 1484 W. U.S. 40, Greenfield, Indiana, between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, 2009. Funeral service is at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 9, 2009, at the mortuary followed by cremation. Later interment will be at New Palestine Cemetery.
