FORTVILLE – Phyllis Joan (Spencer) Bass, age 72, of Fortville, passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at her home in Fortville.  Born on September 5, 1936 in Greenfield, she was the daughter of Samuel and Eva Spencer.  She married John R. Bass on June 9, 1952 in Greenfield. 

 

Mrs. Bass was a clerk for Sears in Indianapolis and Greenfield for many years.  She had previously worked for McCuller’s Meat Market in Greenfield.  She was a member of Eden United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women’s Group, and Hancock Memorial Hospital Guild.  Mrs. Bass was also past president of Riley School PTA and a historian for Good Sam’s Club.  She loved camping and traveling, and she loved her family.

 

Survivors include her husband, John R. Bass of Fortville; children, Jodi (Tom) Watkins of Mt. Comfort, John M. (Cornelia) Bass of Greenfield, and Jeff L. (Susan) Bass of Fortville; six grandchildren, Jason (Ginger) Bass, Sam Watkins, Jana Bass, Travis (Amy) Watkins, Jennifer (Richard) Wright, and Monika Bass; and seven great-grandchildren, Wesley, Cody, Jaycee, Jaida, Josie, Alexis, and Payge; and brother, Gene “Spook” (Marilyn) Spencer of Greenfield.  Her parents and a brother, Norman Spencer, preceded her in death.

 

Visitation will be on Friday, November 14, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield.  Funeral services will be on Saturday, November 15, at 10:00 a.m. at the mortuary.  Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Eden United Methodist Church, 2122 E.
